Must be proficient in written and spoken English DUTIES:
The Minneapolis VA Anesthesia Service provides veteran patients with anesthesia procedures for both ambulatory and inpatient
surgical procedures. The services include: rendering patients insensate for surgical procedures (general anesthesia), major
neuroaxial blocks for surgical procedures (spinal and epidural anesthesia), nerve block for surgical procedures, monitored
anesthesia care, procedures to alleviate post-operative pain and resuscitation services. Anesthesia services are available 24 hours a
day 7 days a week.
The department utilizes anesthesiologists (physicians who specialize in anesthesiology) and nurse anesthesia (nurses
who specialize in anesthesia). We work in an anesthesia team to provide anesthesia and critical care services to the patients who
are undergoing surgical procedures at the Minneapolis VAMC. At the Minneapolis! VA, the physician anesthesiologist directs the
anesthesia care team. Our philosophy is that the management of anesthesia is best accomplished using a team approach. It is the
e xpectation that at the Minneapolis VAMC the anesthesia care team will operate to provide the safest possible patient care. Job
responsibilities vary, depending if a Nurse II or a Nurse III. These responsibilities are stated in a functional statement that
is available upon request.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS: U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nur! sing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nur! sing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Current, unrestricted certification as a Certified Nurse Anesthetist
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2! -3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience. GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Experience as a CRNA will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel.

The criteria are as follows:
! Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization; Profession! al Development: performance, education/career development; Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality; Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.

CRNA QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must be a Citizen of the United States.
2. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
3. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestric! ted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
4. Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
5. Certification in Nurse Anesthesia
Additional requirements for Advanced Practice Nurses (APRN): An APRN must be licensed or otherwise recognized as an APRN in a State, possess a masterÂ's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as an APRN from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body.
Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by an Advance Practice Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a APRN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration! and Scientific Inquiry . Each dimension of practice has criteria that ! demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization; Professional Development: performance, education/career development; Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality; and Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.
The Advanced Practice Nurse III must demonstrate performance and leadership that is broad and complex enough to improve the care for a group of patients and document outcomes at the program or service level. This would include leadership in ethics, resource utilization, education/career development, performance, collaboration, collegiality, quality of care and research. Documentation of outcomes is required in consideration for appointment or promotion.
