The Charge Nurse is responsible to provide direct coordination and supervision of clinical and non-clinical operations. This position ensur! es efficient patient flow, while upholding high standards of quality and service. The Charge Nurse will be in-charge of day to day operations under the direction of the Director/Administrator and while in this role shall jointly oversee the functions within Human Resource, QI/PI, facility and equipment while being a good fiscal steward.

The Charge Nurse shall have general knowledge about clinical and regulatory standards, CRMC policies and possess skills to ensure compliance with such standards. Delegated duties and project work to meet departmental goals and objectives shall be expected. This position works closely with Surgeons, CRNAs, and the Medical Director of Peri-Operative Services, Administrator and CRMC Directors. This position shall facilitate work teams, strong delegation of work assignments, independent decision making, problem solving and a high degree of self-initiative.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: Gradua! te of an accredited school of nursing. Two to three years expe! rience in direct patient care. Two to three years supervisory or lead experience.

Special Skills and Aptitudes: Must possess strong supervisory, communication, and problem solving skills. Effective interpersonal relationship skills including good listening and communication. Ability to communicate effectively in a variety of settings and with a wide variety of people. Ability to develop effective relationships with various stakeholders. Ability to handle confidential information discreetly and appropriately. Ability to develop and implement plans for program/department operations. Ability to adapt resources to meet the needs of the situation. Adjusts to stressful situations with confidence and good judgment. Comprehensive knowledge of nursing theories and Surgical practices.

License/Certifications: Current MinnesotaRN license. American Heart Association CPR and ACLS certificates.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

RN:
Exe! rcises concern for the patient’s welfare, maintains knowledge of the patient’s condition, administers medication and performs treatment while practicing and maintaining high ethical standards.

Responsible for the direct and indirect care of residents/patients assigned to her/him under the guidance of the Director of Surgical Services and/or Assistant Director of Surgical Services, maintains accurate and complete records of nursing assessments and care, and counsels of the client and family in meeting nursing and related needs.

Remains up-to-date on new nursing skills and technology, utilizing the nursing process (observation, assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation) in the delivery of care.

Performs duties in accordance with physician’s orders, the Medical Center’s policies, methods, and techniques, and in coordinating with other departments and Medical Center personnel.

Provides leadership and promotes teamwork.

When requested, participates in in-service programs, education pro! grams, and orientation of new personnel.

Charge Nurse:
Uphold the standards of performance as outlined in the Registered Nurse (RN) position description.

Supervises the day-to-day operations of the Operating Room(s) coordinating communication and patient flow between Reception, Anesthesia, SDS, Operating Room and Recovery within Surgical Services Department.

Manages staffing levels and distributes work assignments adjusting accordingly to daily activities.

Responds appropriately to urgent physician needs and complaints, involves Director as necessary keeping them abreast of issues.

Directs and participates in quality and process improvement initiatives, ensures accurate reporting of data, implements process changes in a fashion that meets departmental goals and QI/PI objectives.

Coordinates orientation and educational programs that ensures proper orientation and staff training. Completes staff evaluation and d! ocumented competency testing as appropriate.

Provides feedback to employee to improve individual and departmental performance.

Provides FTE and fiscal management oversight for the OR and SDS. Actively manages FTE and use of overtime. Seeks opportunities to decrease departmental expense and efficiency.

Provides leadership and supervision of staff and processes within Central Supply and Reprocessing.

Coordinates the scheduling, receiving and delivery of material supplies and equipment with external vendor partners.

Remains up-to-date on new nursing skills and technology utilizing the nursing process in the delivery of care, administers medications, performs treatment and maintains an accurate and complete record.

Coordinates OR, SDS and PACU scheduling of surgery blocks with scheduler assuring all equipment, surgeons and staff needs are met.

Performs a Can-Do Spirit when other duties are assigned.

PM C! harge Nurse:
Supervise the end of the day to day operations of ! the department coordinating communication and patient flow.

Perform duties associated with direct RN patient care and demonstrate a willingness to provide direct care when needed.

Complete verification of patient records each day for the charge master.

Coordinate the orientation schedules and documentation completion of new employees.

Coordinate required annual education for the department working with the Education department and Director to ensure the correct documentation is completed as required by the various regulatory agencies and policies of CRMC.

Complete additional preparations for the next day OR schedule.
